The Glebe is located south of downtown Ottawa, bordered by Highway 417, the Rideau Canal along Queen Elizabeth Drive, continuing along Carling Avenue to Bronson Avenue, and looping back to the 417. Originally owned by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church as Clergy Reserve land in 1837, the area opened for development in 1870. The term “glebe” referred to land owned by the church as part of a clergyman’s benefice providing income – hence the name “The Glebe.”
Much of the neighbourhood consists of detached homes built in the early 20th century, many of which now hold heritage status. The area’s popularity grew with the establishment of Lansdowne Park in 1847, which hosted the annual Central Canada Exhibition. TD Place Arena was later added in 1967, enhancing the community’s appeal.
OC Transpo buses run along Bank Street through Centretown, providing convenient public transit options. The O-Train is also nearby, with Carling Avenue Station offering connections to Bayview Station, Carleton University, Mooney’s Bay, and ending at Greenboro Station.
Both the University of Ottawa and Carleton University are within short distance of The Glebe, accessible via direct OC Transpo and O-Train routes.
Lansdowne Park is a major attraction in The Glebe, home to the Aberdeen Pavilion, which hosts festivals and markets throughout the year. Sports fans gather at TD Place for Ottawa Redblacks football games, Ottawa Fury soccer matches, and Ottawa 67’s hockey games or concerts at the arena.
Annual events include:
Aberdeen Square also hosts events such as the Ottawa Winter Brewfest each February.
Behind Lansdowne Park, off Queen Elizabeth Drive, is the Lansdowne Dog Park – a fenced area with plenty of space for dogs to run, play, and socialize. The park has water stations to keep your dog cool and seating areas for owners. It is open year-round and well lit at night.
Glebe Memorial Park, located at 75 Glendale Avenue, features a splash pad open during the summer months. Opening and closing dates vary based on weather and maintenance schedules.
For fitness enthusiasts, The Glebe offers several gyms, spin studios, and yoga centres, including:
